AI in MahaKumbh 2025: Where Tradition Embraces Technology

This year’s MahaKumbh Mela in Prayagraj, India, stands as a remarkable fusion of ancient traditions and cutting-edge technology. It demonstrates how cultural heritage and innovation can coexist, creating an enriching experience for millions of visitors.

AI-Driven Immersive Experiences

  • 360-Degree Virtual Reality Stalls: Visitors can immerse themselves in virtual tours of major events at this iconic festival, held after 144 years.

  • Drone Extravaganza: A stunning display of 2,000 drones will illuminate the significance of the MahaKumbh, blending storytelling with technology.

  • GIS-Based Navigation: Interactive maps integrated with Google Maps will help visitors locate essential public utilities seamlessly. (GIS - Geographic Information System)

Advanced Security for Devotees

  • AI-Powered Surveillance: Cameras equipped with artificial intelligence, along with drones, anti-drones, and tethered drones, will ensure comprehensive monitoring of the event.

  • Underwater Drones: Cutting-edge underwater drones, capable of operating up to 100 meters deep in low-light conditions, will provide round-the-clock surveillance of water bodies. These drones transmit real-time updates to the Integrated Command and Control Center (ICCC) for quick response to any suspicious activities.

  • Remote-Controlled Life Buoys: These advanced safety devices can swiftly reach individuals in distress, ensuring rapid rescue during emergencies.

Enhanced Safety and Connectivity

  • Lost and Found Digital Centers: In collaboration with the state police, high-tech centers will digitally register missing individuals, facilitating reunions through social media announcements and public alerts.

  • Cybersecurity Measures: To combat rising cyber threats, a team of cyber experts from IIT Kanpur will safeguard the digital platforms associated with the event, including websites, apps, and QR codes, ensuring a secure online experience for all pilgrims.

AI-Powered Healthcare at MahaKumbh 2025

A 100-bed central hospital with a state-of-the-art 10-bed AI-powered ICU has been set up at the MahaKumbh Mela in Prayagraj to ensure advanced healthcare for pilgrims.

  • AI-Enabled ICU: Equipped with real-time monitoring via AI cameras and multilingual microphones, allowing instant communication in 22 regional and 19 international languages.

  • Rapid Emergency Alerts: AI systems immediately notify medical teams of critical conditions for swift intervention.

MahaKumbh 2025 promises to be a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation, setting new benchmarks for cultural celebrations worldwide.

AI technologies used at the MahaKumbh 2025

1. Computer Vision

  • AI cameras use computer vision to analyze live video feeds, detect anomalies, and identify specific objects or people in real-time.

  • Technologies: Object detection (e.g., YOLO, Faster R-CNN), facial recognition, motion detection, and activity recognition.

2. Machine Learning Models

  • These systems are trained on vast datasets to recognize patterns, behaviors, or unusual activities automatically.

  • Techniques: Deep learning (e.g., convolutional neural networks), anomaly detection algorithms, and predictive analytics.

3. Edge Computing

  • AI computations are performed at the edge (within cameras or local servers) to process data in real-time, reducing latency and dependency on central servers.

4. Internet of Things (IoT)

  • Drones, cameras, and other connected devices share data through IoT networks, enabling coordinated surveillance.

  • Protocols: MQTT, LoRaWAN, or 5G for low-latency communication.

5. Anti-Drone and Counter-Drone Technologies

  • For managing unauthorized drones, the system uses RF jammers, GPS spoofing, or even AI-based systems to detect and neutralize threats.

  • Examples: Dedrone, Droneshield.

6. Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT)

  • Integrates GIS data with AI for spatial tracking, such as monitoring crowd density or movement patterns.

7. Real-Time Data Processing Platforms

  • AI models are deployed on platforms like NVIDIA Jetson, Google TensorFlow, or AWS IoT Core for high-speed data analysis and reporting.

8. Drone-Specific AI Systems

  • Autonomous drones equipped with AI can navigate, monitor large areas, and perform specific tasks like tracking or delivering messages without direct human control.

The integration of these technologies creates a smart, responsive surveillance system capable of ensuring safety and efficiency in large-scale gatherings.
